Sunday Special
For the first time this season, I ventured out beyond my usual laps to Conservancy Park and back. This time I rode past the park and took my old route out to a small farm that sells roadside fruits and veggies.
The boss man at Allen's Produce in Allenville calls it a 'medium crop' of strawberries this year. He was out of them when I stopped at the halfway point of my ride today.
But I'll be back via car Monday morning because there is nothing like the taste of fresh Wisconsin strawberries in June!
I decided early today that I might try this longer ride for the first time this season despite my groin muscle injury. My plan was to just take it easy because the circumstances to make the attempt were right.
Sunday...meaning I could sleep in, which for me today meant getting up at 6:15 instead of 3:15. Added to that fact, I fueled up properly, with a breakfast of scrambled eggs, peanut butter and honey toast and a banana.
It felt a bit odd to be honest, out there on the open road in the countryside all alone. Looks like the corn I saw will indeed be knee high by the 4th of July.
I must report something that made me happy as well, because I am the first to bitch about dangerous drivers putting me into dangerous situations just because they either don't care or just don't realize the danger they cause.
This is a narrow country road with no shoulder to use as an escape route. That's why I sort of gave up riding this route. Not once. Not twice. THREE TIMES today drivers behind me did the right thing. So to be fair, as much as I complain about the idiots I give kudos to these drivers today. They did NOT just whiz past me as we were either going up a slight hill or around a curve with limited views of on-coming traffic. Instead, I could hear their engines in each case back off as they slowed to remain behind me. I gave them the go around signal as soon as it was clear that no cars were coming from the opposite direction. And as they passed me I again gave them the thumbs up as a way to say thanks for doing the right/safe thing.
Physically, I just took it slow and easy all through the ride to protect the injury.
It worked.
An old-fashioned 30-mile ride on a sunny Sunday. Felt good.
