Return of the Lake Fly
They're baaaaack!
Ah yes, another annual rite of spring riding season has arrived.
Today, while doing a couple of my Lake Loop laps I ran into the first lake flies of the season. Some call them May flies, but they are a couple of days early for that.
Keep your mouth closed, unless you're looking to swallow a little added protein I guess.
I often write here about 'cooler near the lake' and that was the case again today, with this picture to show you where I am riding and where the lake flies are along the shore of Lake Winnebago.
The weather played a factor again today.
As you can see, when this picture was taken today the sun was still out.
By the end of this lap it was long gone and dark rain clouds had moved in quickly.
There is always a bit of a steady wind off the open water as well, so it never feels as warm as the temperature says.
I have to laugh because I saw a couple of people in nothing more than a t-shirt today out in their yards. Me? I've got on a long-sleeved base layer under a long-sleeved jersey, with a wind jacket over the top.
3/4-length bibs keep my knees covered up as well. I even had the full balaclava on today to keep my head and neck warm. I felt fine until the sun went away for good. Then I started getting cold. Plus, on the final stretch back home I could hear something hitting my wind jacket.
I think there might have been a few drops of rain starting to come out of those black clouds...or it was just lake flies hitting me!
