March in like a HAM

Maybe it was the ham sandwich.

I mean, look this thing...

My wife came home from Festival Foods with one of their hot ham sandwiches for lunch. They really load these things up over there!

So while watching the first quarter of the Milwaukee Bucks' game on TV I consumed what I believed to be my fuel for getting outside on a bike ride this first day of March. The point being of course that this was my opportunity to keep my streak alive, now having ridden my road bike outside in every month of the year.

The streak lives. On to April.

I decided to take one Lake Loop lap just for a little change of scenery from my usual neighborhood crit course, a decision I would soon regret. Sure the sun was out and it was 42 degrees, but the wind chill was 35 and riding along the shore of Lake Winnebago, a.k.a. a giant ice cube, was cold.

Damn cold.

As I made my way around lap #2 of the crit course it became clear that this was no fun. I was freezing and just could not warm up. Plus, my legs felt like boards. I had no juice whatsoever out there today for some reason.

Maybe it had to do with the fact that I hadn't been on a bike in over a week. Maybe it was the sandwich. Maybe it was the cold. But maybe, just maybe, it was simply a combination of those things that left me uninspired and on the sidelines early at only 13 miles today.

Still. It's March and that counts for riding every month of 2020.
