Dog poop waterfall

When I last wrote here I talked about getting back to proper form when it comes to pedal stroke, as I shared a 'perfect circles' tip and promised another tip to come. Here it is.

Dog Poop Waterfall is back!

Now, not surprisingly when I Googled dog poop waterfall there was no picture of a waterfall made of dog poop.

So instead....

When you think about the pedal stroke you think two strokes as your shoes are clipped in.

You push down.

You pull up.

But there can be more to it than that, and it can help get you back to where you want to be out on the road.

Double that two stroke approach and make it a four stroke approach from time to time by thinking of my dog poop waterfall.

Some time long ago my riding pal/coach Jerry told me about the waterfall portion of this. When you think about a waterfall think about the place where it is just about to begin to fall over the edge. The water sort of bunches up at that spot and hoists itself up and over the top before crashing downward. Think like that at the top of the pedal stroke. It may not sound like much here in writing, but try it. Get a feel for it and you'll see what I mean. Don't just push down at the top. Go up and over the top like a waterfall.

Now for the other half of this equation, the dog poop.

For a little something extra in your pedal stroke, don't waste that dead zone at the bottom. Imagine you just stepped in some dog poop and need to pull your foot back to scrape it off the bottom of your shoe. Now do that in your pedal stroke!

If you combine dog poop and waterfall you have doubled your pedal stroke from two areas of power to four.

This isn't something to sustain, but I firmly believe in it when I need a little boost out there. Maybe it's a little headwind. Maybe it's a little incline. Maybe it's just toward the end of your ride and you are tired. I find when I tell myself to dog poop waterfall for a minute or so that my rpm's pick back up and my speed slightly picks up to where it should be. It helps.

As for today on the trainer, basic stuff, thinking of dog poop waterfall at times.

Next post, another tip, and it has to do with the Peloton TV commercial once again!
