Perfect Circles
I saw this pedaling tip years ago in a book, perhaps it was titled "Bike Racing 101", but the exact source doesn't really matter now. I simply wanted to share this tip with you as part of today's workout post because I was thinking about it myself as I did my 'Philoton' workout today.
Perfect circles.
As you pedal, from time to time imagine chalk taped to each big toe pointing in toward your frame.
As you pedal, try making perfect circles on a chalkboard.
Getting back to basics for me this time of year on a trainer means several things, as I acquaint myself with a bike I have ignored for a couple months. One of the basics is pedal motion. Don't be wasteful. Use a full stroke every time you go around on that bike. Draw perfect circles with that pretend chalk.
The point here is to be smooth versus choppy. Be efficient with your pedals and they'll take good care of you. Once you are in the habit of being smooth, there is another level you can take this to, and I will explain that one in my next post after I work on it myself. (HINT; It involves dog poop)
Today I rode for miles, pushing it to an even 10 miles using my Basic 30 gear routine of spending 10 minutes per gear up then down in difficulty. Do the gear changes if for no other reason than to break up the monotony of 40 minutes on the trainer.
