Oh the headaches that come when this little computer goes blank.
First of all, I know, it's old and as I have been told 100 times before by other guys, "Get a Garmin."
Well, that's all fine and dandy, but those things are expensive and this old computer I still use works just fine for me...when the battery isn't dead!
I had the battery replaced, then had to go through the headache of re-setting everything from scratch. That means finding the instructions online and then trying to make sense of them in a world of button pushing in the proper sequence.
I thought I had it all back to normal....miles not K's....proper wheel size....date, day, time, month, year....all that good stuff.
But when I set out on a ride today, the computer stayed showing nothing more than all zeros. Nothing. Crap.
So I pulled off my planned route and rode over to Cranked Bike Studio for a second day in a row to see if they could lend a helping hand.
First plan of attack was to replace the battery in the lower read unit as well. Nothing. No change. Then they took my entire bike back to the shop area to take a look. After five or so minutes there came my bike out from the back as the guy from behind the counter said no luck. They don't know what's wrong with it.
Meantime I'm hearing all about how much a new Garmin would cost me. Well, not ready to give up on my old faithful Cateye so I rode home determined to give it one more try.
I figured it wasn't picking up a signal....that maybe there was a signal re-set that I had missed the day before. I ran through the process one more time, getting to a few screens I had never even seen before. Nothing. I swear this thing has so many settings you could warm a cheeseburger with it.
Then I ran through it all again, but this time a different screen popped up, one that the instructions actually said should come up. This was encouraging.
I spun the back wheel and numbers magically appeared!
Had I done it? Did it all sync up now? Would it work?
I strapped on my shoes and helmet to do a lap in the neighborhood and things now seem to be registering as usual once again.
I think I just figured it out all by myself, when an entire bike shop couldn't help me. They probably just didn't want to deal with trying to figure out the old girl.
Not so fast with your fancy Garmin....I do believe my old
Cateye is up and running again.
Like I said at the start....kudos to me!
