The Story
Outside, it's cold. Temp is -3 and it's only getting colder over the next 48 hours. I have to try to hang on until the weekend when this horrible deep freeze is supposed to end.
Today I simply wanted a little sweat. I did the 10's workout, but added a stiff gear and rpm for the final minute of the middle 10 minutes at tempo. It's sort of like kicking into chase mode, or trying to hang onto the back wheel of the rider in front of you, that rider who is much faster than you of course! (I did this in the final five minutes as well for a couple minutes)
I'm a firm believer in at least once during a trainer ride pushing to get your rpm up in a higher gear and your heart beating faster than normal. It's these high-effort times that actually help make you a better rider. Just going along at the same effort/pace/speed all the time is OK, but you won't really improve at all using that approach.
