The Story

Weather so often has played a role in my bike riding past. It motivates. It spoils. It disappoints.

Today I THOUGHT the weather story was one of motivation due to very mild temperatures.

Highs predicted in the mid to upper 70's for today, with storms/rain on the horizon by evening bringing in more normal colder air for this time of year.

So I thought the story would be that this would mark the final ride of the year with bare legs and arms. That may still be true, but it turned out that by the end of this ride I was soaked, and not with sweat!

Heading out I thought I would perhaps try to ride out to High Cliff one final time this season, risky being that far away from home should the rain come early.

Once on the road I changed my mind after seeing dark sky on the horizon. I could have played it really safe and just did laps in my neighborhood, but I felt like taking in some scenery.

Compromise--head out toward the Little GTO route and break if off early if the weather looked iffy.

I was taking my time just enjoying the ride. Rather than go the full 30 I turned off a little earlier just to be weather safe.

At mile 20 it began to rain, nothing serious but a steady cool rain. Interesting.

Then with only a mile or a little more until I was home, the sky opened up, and for the first time in several years I found myself riding in a downpour! I ended up soaked right down to those socks you see.

Rain makes the road a bit slippery, reduces your braking capabilities, and when you throw in some autumn leaves on the road things can turn sour in a hurry. Hit a slippery patch of wet leaves the wrong way while turning and you're down. Trust me. Been there. Done that.

And wouldn't you know it.....as I type this after a post-ride shower and lunch....the sun is out BRIGHT once again.

Reminds me....time to go wipe down my bike.
