The Story

A lot happened on the this ride, a ride I pushed up by a day because I felt antsy to attempt the climb at High Cliff State Park. The sun was out, at least for the first half of the event, so out the door I went.

Riding out there I took it easy, an attempt to save my legs for the big climb up to the lookout tower. As I turned right onto the road leading into the park I saw a couple of lady roadies coming down that same road toward me.

Together they passed me, shouting out a proper warning from behind about coming up on my left. We exchanged pleasant hellos and comments about the headwind we were going into before they were on their way.

I had no desire to try to hang with them. I had a climbing plan to stick to.

The climb went well this time, with the real struggle only hitting me toward the end on that one last step little shot in the tail it gives you.

Once at the top, there the girls were already, at a standstill doing something on their phones. I had a feeling they were headed to that climb just like me.

I was thinking of reader Sue D. as I went up the hill, hoping she will make it on her first first attempt. Sue? Anything yet? Wanna try with me on Saturday? I'll do it again!

I climbed the second little hill that leads to the tower, where I took a short break for a drink.

When I got back on my bike to head home, my computer lit up but I was getting no reading at all, neither from the crank for the rpm nor the wheel for the speed.

I stopped and tried to adjust the magnet and read unit but nothing worked. So off I went with no working computer.

That's a funny feeling, to not see anything when you look down. It's also a bit liberating. Heck, just ride your bike!

Since I also want to try to ride on a busy Saturday this weekend I wanted to deal with this computer issue right away.

So rather than go home with a busted computer, I rode over to the new Cranked Bike Studio location where they got me working once again with a new battery and a re-set of my old Cateye wireless computer, a model they apparently no longer make. Nice job by Cranked to get me back on the road with a working readout.

So with that little add-on detour tagged onto my climb miles today, this ended up being a 40-mile ride that finished under dark, cloudy skies.

Saturday is supposed to be hot and sunny. I hope they right. I'm ready to try a back to back effort.
