The Story

I should know better, but the brain always seems to think the body can do more than it actually can.

Today I decided to do a simple hill interval workout. After a the first few rotations of :30 on and :30 recovery, I thought it would be a good idea to ramp things up a bit. I triple-shifted into a really stiff gear, wanting to do this :30 out of the saddle to simulate going up a steep section of hill.

Bad idea.

Within the first 10 strokes or so I suddenly had sharp pain in my right knee. I geared down just a touch to feel things out, then tried again in the easier gear.

Nope.

Pain still there. It was obvious I tweaked something and was now just hoping I could continue and spin this out without having to get off the bike.

I was able to do exactly that.

Bullet dodged.

Lesson learned, and here's why.

I have contended for some time now that riding on a trainer has different effects on your body than riding out on the road.

The 'give' just isn't there.

And that is amplified for me because of my hip replacement on that side. I should never get out of the saddle while on the trainer. I believe I'm just asking for trouble when I do. I knew that going in, but my brain said I should try to push it today.

Remind me not to listen to my brain in the future!
